Working online offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Flexibility – You can set your own schedule and work from anywhere.

  • Work-life balance – Spend more time with your family while earning a living.

  • Global opportunities – Access international clients and projects without leaving your home.

Who can apply for online jobs? The great thing about remote work is that anyone can start. Whether you're a student looking for part-time income, a freelancer seeking projects, a professional shifting to a digital career, or a stay-at-home parent looking to contribute financially, there's an online job for you.

Blog Outline:

Where and How to Start?

I was in my gap year in college when I first landed a job online. Of course, you will not start with a high paying position or not start with impressive benefits, but could be something for upstarters.

My personal advice is if you are still new and you are having a hard time landing a full time position, you can start by working on task basis like product description writing, logo or graphic designing, blog contributor, etc. The goal is to build a portfolio and gather some client feedback and recommendations. This experience can also teach you how to deal with different types of personalities in an online setting.

The following are different platforms that offer remote work opportunities.

Disclaimer: We are not paid to promote them.

Popular Online Job Platforms

If you're looking for a freelancing career, these platforms are excellent places to start:

  • Upwork – One of the largest freelancing marketplaces, offering jobs in writing, graphic design, virtual assistance, programming, and more. It requires a well-optimized profile to attract clients.

  • OnlineJobs.ph – A Filipino-focused job board where virtual assistants, SEO specialists, content writers, and other professionals can find work directly from employers.

  • Fiverr – Perfect for those who prefer selling specific services as "gigs." Ideal for designers, writers, video editors, and social media managers.

  • Freelancer.com – Offers various remote jobs, from data entry to high-paying tech projects. A bidding system is used, so competition can be tough.

  • PeoplePerHour – Best for skilled professionals who prefer hourly contracts. Great for developers, marketers, and business consultants.

I had experiences using these platforms:

  • Upwork - most of my experience was when they were still called Odesk. I managed to maintain 4 stars and above and I have encountered clients in different types of projects, mostly writing jobs. In my own opinion, I think I'm not going back to Upwork. I personally don't like that you have to buy Connects to be able to apply for a job and on top of that they also get 20% from your gross income. Also, if you are new and haven't built any ratings/testimonials yet, you are basically a bottom-feeder on the platform. I'm not saying that you won't have a chance on this platform, what I'm saying though is if you are new to online work and doesn't have a lot of money to invest in your Upwork profile, it's going to be a stressful and discouraging career start.

  • OnlineJobs.ph - The best opportunities that I was able to grabbed came from OLJ. I'm not paid to promote them but it's true. 2 out 3 of my long-term clients, I met them through OLJ. It's also a plus for me that they are not asking employees to pay any fees. I also had the experience of using an employer account in OLJ. If I remember it correctly, the employers pay $80+/month to advertise in the platform plus use the OLJ's time tracker. Most qualms against OLJ is the budding number of scammer accounts. But I believe this is not really an issue that's exclusive to OLJ. I had experience being scammed twice in Upwork. It's really a matter of doing your own due diligence.

  • Fiverr, Freelancer.com and PeoplePerHour - I used these platforms to hire.

  • Preply – Not limited to ESL teaching; you can tutor students in various subjects, including math and science.

Tips for Landing an Online Job in the Philippines

Finding online work can be competitive, but these strategies will increase your chances of success:

  • Build an Optimized Online Profile – Whether on LinkedIn, Upwork, or Fiverr, highlight your skills, experience, and portfolio.

  • Create a Strong Resume and Cover Letter – Tailor each application to match job descriptions.

  • Enhance Your Skills – Take free online courses on platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and Google Digital Garage.
